The deep sea of not-enough

Do you ever feel, no matter how hard you try, you're never enough?

I sometimes think trying to be enough is a bit like trying to empty the sea with a bucket. We stand on the shoreline, knuckles white around the handle, hurling water over our shoulder as if our efforts will tame the tide. But the more we scoop, the more the waves crash in. Endlessly.

And there is always more “not-enoughness” waiting for us. Not in the world, but in the ocean of our minds.

We will never feel enough for our children, our parents, our dreams, our own self-image, our boss, WhatsApp, Christmas. Expectations will always minus reality. We could’ve always done more. And regret is a slippery fish that multiplies fast in the unchartered waters of not-enough.

We will never be enough not because we’re lacking, but because “enough” is a concept the mind floats forever out of reach.

It’s the tide pulling away just as we step forward, inviting us to chase it, knowing we'll never quite catch up.

But what if freedom comes not from emptying the sea, but from putting the bucket down?

Standing on the shore and letting the waves wash, resting in not-enough until we're full again?

Because in the depths below the mind noise, in the place that's quiet and still, nothing's lacking. Here and now, trickling softly between each thought stream, we're always enough.

Happy Tuesday,

Love, Jo
